Abstract
This paper empirically analyzes the effect of the regional difference in agglomeration and industrial structure of domestic petrochemical industries on the employment of their establishments. As the theoretic arguments on agglomeration economies, geographic cluster of an industry makes individual firms in the cluster obtain benefits in terms of the increase in productivity or profitability and it would allow them to have higher demand for employment. This hypothesis could be tested by the relationship between the change in employment of individual establishments and the degree of agglomeration of the region where they locate. According to the empirical results utilizing the Census on Establishments by Statistics Korea, when establishments in petrochemical industries geographically cluster, the increase in their employment is likely to be relatively larger. As local industrial structure is composed by a lot of small-sized establishments, relocation of establishments to the region seems to be more active. These results imply that agglomeration of skill-intensive medium or small-sized firms instead of large firms is required to promptly respond the environmental change for the development of domestic petrochemical industries whose recent trend of growth shows steady state.
