Abstract

We examined the determinants of agglomeration for Korean manufacturing industries. Using the employment location quotient as a measure of concentration, our results resembled those of U. S. manufacturing industries. However, there are some different findings: Although both manufactured inputs and nonmanufacured inputs are important determinants of agglomeration, nonmanufactured inputs have a greater impact on agglomeration for Korean manufacturing industries. Also, aggregate innovation activities as a measure of knowledge spillover appear to be an important factor for agglomeration. We found a positive and significant effect of the total R&D expenditures on agglomeration of firms. We also found that newly established firms' agglomeration pattern is different. Our regression results based on the sample of firms under age five showed that energy costs are more important to agglomeration of new firms than that of established firms. Nonmanufactured inputs have a higher impact on agglomeration of new firms. And the impact of innovation activities is found to be greater for new firms. As in the case of Western countries, labor market pooling is very important and perhaps the strongest Marshallian rationale for agglomeration of firms in Korean manufacturing industries.
