권력은 정치적 의례를 열망한다. 의례는 권력 창출의 중요한 우회적 메커니즘이기 때문이다. 그와 같은 의례에서 취임식은 의례 중의 의례다. 공동체의 새로운 정치적 질서를 이끌 권력이 최초로 그 모습을 드러내는 의례이기 때문이다. 권력이라는 정치적 열망의 보편성만큼 취임의례 또한 인류학적 일반성을 지닌다. 그 점에서 전통과 근대의 취임의례는 권력의 성화라는 공통의 원리를 지니고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 근대는 전통의 원리를 차용하고 있기도 하다. 초월성의 동원이 그것이다. 하지만 그렇다고 해서 정치적 근대가 전통과 전적으로 동일한 운동 양상을 보이는 것은 아니다. 근대를 추동한 힘은 합리성이자 이성이었고, 근대는 그 위에서 전통과 단절되는 새로운 원리와 가치와 체계를 구축했기 때문이다. 근대의 취임식이 권력자의 개별적 인격이 아니라 공동체가 기초하고 있는 이데올로기와 미래의 청사진, 즉 유토피아에 대한 합리적이고 논리적인 설명과 해석 위에서 운동하고 있다는 사실이 그 점을 말해준다.
Abstract
The political power aspires to its rituals because they are important periphrastic mechanisms for creating the power. As one of them, the inaugural ceremony is the most of ceremonies. It presents the first scene in which the new power leads to the community's political order. The inaugural ceremony is anthropologically general as much as political power's desire is universal. In this light, the traditional and modern inaugural ceremonies move around the consecration of power, and the latter borrows the traditional principle toward the consecration, that is, the mobilization of transcendence. But, we could not say that the politically modern ceremony moves under the same principle as traditional one. It was rationality and reason that gave an impetus to modernity, and on them, the modernity has constructed its proper principle, value and system, different from the tradition. It is evidently attested from the fact that the modern inaugural ceremonies don't go around a powerful individual but work around ideology and utopia on which a political community is based.
