마키아벨리의 『군주론』이 1958년 처음으로 우리말로 번역된 지 반세기가 넘었다. 한글 번역본은 수십 종에 이르고 있다. 이 글은 『군주론』 한글 번역본들이 이탈리아어판에 담긴 메시지를 이해하는 데 유익한 기능을 하고 있는지를 검토하고 있다. 『군주론』 연구의 기초는 좋은 번역판에 의해 마련될 수 있기 때문이다. 등가성 번역모델에 근거해서 4종의 한글 번역본(TT)과 이탈리아어판(ST)을 비교하여 TT가 등가성에서 얼마나 벗어나고 있는가에 초점을 맞춰 『군주론』 제12장만을 분석하였다. virtù, fortuna, libertà와 같은 번역 불가능한 용어 번역을 포함하여, 한글 번역본들에서 비등가성과 비충실성이 종종 발생한다. 『군주론』 번역의 풍요에도 불구하고 번역의 빈곤은 사라지지 않고 있다. 『군주론』 한글 번역본들이 각각 고유한 목소리를 지닌다고 인정할지라도, 문화적 번역을 포함하는 번역 과정에서 오류는 피할 수 없다. 좋은 번역을 위한 학습방법은 지적한 오역에서 배우는 것이다. 그러니 등가성과 균형성, 충실성을 지닌 완전한 『군주론』 번역은 도전할 만한 가치가 있는 위업이다.
Abstract
More than half a century has passed since the first Korean translation of Machiavelli’s Il Principe had been published in 1958. Based upon the Model of Translational Equivalence, we compared the modern Italian edition of The Prince (ST) with the four Korean translations of Il Principe (TT1~TT4) through the Chapter 12 of The Prince and analysed how far TT1~TT4 deviate from ST in terms of inter-lingual translation and cultural translation. The analysis reveals as follows: (1) the translational nonequivalence problems occurs in TT1~TT4; (2) there are sometimes errors, non-adequacy and non-fidelity in TT1~TT4 even though unavoidable. To create better Korean versions of Il Principe, it is necessary to ask for feedback on the various Korean editions and to learn from the errors and nonequivalence in TT1~TT4.
