이 글의 목적은 마키아벨리 한국어 역본의 현황을 검토하는 것이다. 한국어 초역은 1958년 당시 경북대학교 서양사 교수였던 최숙형에 의해 이루어졌다. 하지만 그가 번역한 『군주론』은 이탈리아 원어가 아닌 영역본에서 중역된 것이었고, 이러한 언어적 문제는 여전히 완결되지 않은 채 남아 있다. 초역 이후 지금까지 나온 마키아벨리 한국어 역본은 대략 23종을 헤아린다. 한국어 역본의 주요 문제는 다음과 같다. 1) 대부분이 『군주론』 역본이며 다른 작품들에 대한 관심이 부족하다. 2) 원어 텍스트든 영역본이든 대본의 전거가 거의 밝혀져 있지 않다. 3) 번역 과정에서 원 텍스트를 둘러싼 역사적·언어적 콘텍스트가 충분히 고려되고 있지 않다. 4) 역자 해제 상의 오류가 빈번하다. 결론적으로, 위에 지적된 문제들이 해소된, 좀더 정확하고 가독성 있는 번역이 강력히 요청된다.
Abstract
This essay is aimed at reviewing the present state of the Korean translations of Machiavelli. The first Korean translation was done, by Choi, Sook-Hyung, then Professor of Western History, Kyungbuk National University, in 1958. His Prince was, however, a retranslation from the English, not from the original Italian, and such an linguistic problem has still remained completely unsolved. After the first, numbered are about twenty-three Korean transations of Machiavelli. Chief problems in Korean translation of Machaivelli are: 1) Most of those focus on Il Principe and the remaining works are left without proper interest. 2) The original editions for translation, either the Italian or the other secondhand like the English, are almost not specified. 3) In the course of translation, the historical and linguistic contexts surrounding the origianl text are not considered enough. 4) translators' introductions are often in error. In conclusion, the more exact and readable translations correcting the above problems are strongly required.
