Abstract

This study provides an in-depth analysis of changes in North Korea’s consumer culture, focusing on the emerging wealthy class known as the “donju,” who rose amid marketization following the “Arduous March” in the mid-1990s. The spontaneous spread of markets centered around jangmadang led to significant structural changes in sectors such as labor, housing, and informal finance. As some individuals accumulated wealth, they began engaging in conspicuous consumption of luxury goods to express social status and distinguish class boundaries, reflecting patterns similar to those seen in China after its reform and opening. This research reinterprets conspicuous consumption and consumer behavior theories, originally developed in capitalist contexts, within a socialist setting and projects short-, medium-, and long-term developments in North Korea’s consumer culture based on China’s experience. It aims to explore the structural implications and future trajectory of consumption in North Korea.
