Abstract
This study compared and analyzed concepts such as emotional polarization, emotions for minorities, and tolerance for minorities in order to systematically describe political and social conflicts in Korea—more specifically, Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. Based on the perspective connecting political ideology and the discussion of tolerance, the degree of political conflict and its characteristics in Korea, Daegu, and Gyeongsangbuk-do are examined by combining the results of domestic and foreign surveys. The results show Korea's emotional polarization was low in the sense of emotional distance. Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do showed a big difference in their feelings for parties they did not support, but the political polarization in the regions could not be considered very high. In addition, political inclusion and the inclusion of minorities could be a different type of problem. Caution is warranted when saying that Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do are areas with particularly severe emotional political polarization. Korea's polarization is low, which may be due to its low affinity for the entire political party. Research on political ideology, emotions, and tolerance can find practical meaning when more specific political phenomena or behaviors are linked to actual actions. Therefore, more empirical and in-depth follow-up studies are needed.
