본 연구는 2010년 7월에 실시한 설문조사결과를 분석하여 한국사회의 관용의 수준과 혐오집단을 밝히고 있다. 관용에 대한 연구는 사회갈등을 치유할 수 있는 중요한개념임에도 불구하고 사회자본, 신뢰와 달리 관심이 소홀하였다. 지금까지 관용에 대한실증적 연구가 거의 존재하지 않는다는 점을 고려할 때 본 연구의 결과는 향후 관용의경험적 분석의 토대로 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 본 연구의 결과는 첫째, 응답자의 45.2%는 우리나라의 정치적 자유가 보장되어 있다고 믿는 것으로 나타났다. 미국의 2005년 42.6%에 비해 오히려 약간 더 높다. 둘째, 미국은 인종요인이 정치적 자유에 대한 인식을 좌우하는 핵심 요인이지만, 우리나라는 세대와 연령으로 나타났다. 셋째, 우리나라의 선호집단과 혐오집단은 이념과 지역을 중심으로 다르게 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 가장 혐오하는 집단의 선택은 지역, 연령, 학력에 따라 상이하게 나타났다. 다섯째, 이명박 후보지지 여부와 정당지지 여부에 따라 혐오집단 선택이달리 나타났다. 마지막으로 관용 수준을 간접적으로 말해주는 11개 집단에 대한 호감도 수치를 요인분석(factor analysis)한 결과 ‘반미진보집단호감형,’ ‘지역주의집단형,’‘반공보수집단호감형’의 3개의 요인이 비교적 선명하게 추출되었다. 결론적으로, 한국사회의 관용의 수준은 매우 낮은 수준이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 미국과 비교해볼 때 정치적 자유에 대한 인식은 큰 차이가 없지만, 혐오집단의 정치적 활동에 대한 허용 의지는 절반 수준으로 매우 낮게 나타났다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes survey results conducted on July, 2010. The main goal of this research is to reveal the most disliked groups and the level of tolerance in Korean society. The study on tolerance has been relatively neglected regardless of its potential contribution to social integration. This study may contribute to the related researches that empirically investigate the level of tolerance. The findings of this study can be summarized as followings. First of all, 45.2% of respondents tend to believe that political freedom is allowed in Korea, which is a little higher than 42.6% of US in 2005. Next, it is found that age and generation are two important factors which affect the level of political freedom. In addition, it is found that ideology and region are very significant factors which determine the selection of disliked groups. The choice in 2007 presidential election and party identification also affect the selection of disliked groups. Finally, the factor analysis also revealed three clear-cut factors which can be evidence of previous findings. This paper concludes that tolerance level in Korea is very low. Compared to America, Korean’s willingness to allow political activities of disliked groups is significantly low.
