Abstract

By examining the relationship between private credit growth and bank stability while focusing on macro data of the main 36 countries and micro data of Korea’s banks over the period 2000: 1Q - 2015:3Q, this paper analyzes the impact of increasing private credit loans on the banks’ stability. It is able to use the results of its empirical analysis to draw the following four conclusions. First, the negative impact of private credit growth on bank stability is apparent in the emerging economies. Second such a trend is much stronger in Emerging economies including Korea, after the financial crisis. Third, the possibility of credit risk caused by private credit is mainly coming from credit excess. Finally, non performing loan strengthen the negative relationship between private credit growth and bank stability in Korea’s banks, and this trend is seen more in these after the global financial crisis. Taken together, the stronger negative relationship between private credit growth and bank stability can be strengthen under the non performing loan in particular in Emerging economies rather than in Advance economies. In addition, in case of Korea’s banks, such a trend is strong in smaller banks than larger ones after the crisis.
