Abstract

Zhang Zai's Qi-based philosophy(氣學) and the Cheng brothers' Li-based philosophy(理學) had a significant impact on the integration and systematization of Neo-Confucianism into Zhu Xi's school of thought. This paper aims to examine how Zhang Zai's Qi philosophy and the Cheng brothers' Li philosophy exhibited both collaboration and conflict in this process. The author first reviews the conceptual history of Li(理) and Qi(氣) before assessing the validity of the view that Zhang Zai's academic foundation was influenced by the Cheng brothers. Following this, the paper contrasts the theoretical structures of Qi philosophy and Li philosophy, analyzing their backgrounds. Specifically, in the developmental stages of Neo-Confucianism, the first stage involved Zhang Zai’s Qi philosophy emerging as a critique of Daoist and Buddhist metaphysics. In the second stage, the Cheng brothers' Li philosophy arose in response to the perceived limitations of Zhang Zai’s Qi philosophy. A detailed comparison of the theoretical structures of Qi philosophy and Li philosophy is conducted in terms of ontology and moral psychology. In ontology, Zhang Zai viewed Qi as the fundamental principle of the universe, asserting that Qi is the substance that forms and transforms all things. For him, appearance and essence are two aspects of a monistic world shaped by the transformations of Qi. In contrast, the Cheng brothers argued that Li, which represents the essence, serves as the fundamental principle that defines all existence, while Qi is merely a phenomenal element that follows Li. In moral psychology, Zhang Zai believed that moral cultivation occurs through the purification of Qi and that the movement and transformation of Qi directly affect human moral states. On the other hand, the Cheng brothers held that moral cultivation is achieved not through the purification of Qi but through the preservation and expansion of human nature(性), interpreting human nature as the manifestation of Li. At first glance, Zhang Zai’s philosophy appears to consistently adhere to a Qi-monism in both cosmology and moral psychology. However, in the realm of moral psychology, his Qi philosophy ultimately reveals a dualistic stance. In the final section of this paper, I seek to clarify the origins of this theoretical inconsistency within Zhang Zai’s Qi philosophy.
