Abstract

The emergence of the universe was one of the central issues in Chinese metaphysics, and Neo-Confucians was no exception. The critical divide between Neo-Confucians’ views in this regard rests mainly on the role and significance of qi (氣) and li (理) in the formation of the universe and the myriad things in it. In this study I briefly explain the two qi-monist Neo-Confucian philosophers views the Chinese Zhang Zai and Korean Seo Gyeongdeok and the li-primalist Neo-Confucian scholars Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi. Then I argue that li-primalists stance is difficult to maintain as they use the notion of li for various meanings and that they fail to give an explanation on why li was necessary for the emergence of the universe. I argue that li funtions as an identity element, having no influence on the emergence of the universe. When seeking logical coherence, the qi-monist application emerges as superior, with the application of Ockham’s razor further supporting the qi-monist explanation.
