This is a rejoinder of Keun Hyung Kim’s “‘Faith of Christ’and ‘Faith in Christ’: In ‘ zero-sum’ relationship or ‘ win-win’ relationship?-A Reconsideration of Πίστις Χριστοῦ in Galatians” in Korean Evangelical New Testament Studies, Volume 11, Number 4, 2012. Kim’s article, “‘Faith of Christ’and ‘Faith in Christ’”, critically reviewing Choi’s article, “How to interpret Πίστις Χριστοῦ ? -With a contextual Study of ‘Faith’and ‘Righteousness’in Galatians 2:15-21, 3:1-29 and 5:6”in Korean Evangelical New Testament Studies, Volume 10,Number 4, 2011, which supports an objective genitive interpretation of Πίστις Χριστοῦ in Galatians, claims that Πίστις Χριστοῦ (2:16; 3:22),ἐκ πίστεως (3:23) and h` pi,stij (3:23,25) should be interpreted in the subjective genitive, namely, “faith (or faithfulness) of Christ”, while being interpreting ἐκ πίστεως in 3:2,5,14,26 as “believers’faith in Christ”and ἐκ πίστεωςin 3:7,8,9 as Abraham’s and believers’faith in Christ. The article then concludes that Paul’s principle of justification in Galatians is based on both “the faithfulness of Christ”and “believer’s faithfulness in Christ”. phrases Πίστις Χριστοῦ , ἐκ πίστεως(διὰ) and h` pi,stij in Galatians,from which Kim had sought to lay the foundations of his argument for the faithfulness of Christ in Galatians. Through a contextual, syntactical and exegetical investigation of the phrases Πίστις Χριστοῦ , ἐκ (διὰ.) πίστεως and h` pi,stij in Galatians, Choi’s article points out the weaknesses in Kim’s arguments and then posits that the phrases Πίστις Χριστοῦ , ἐκ (διὰ.) πίστεως and h` pi,stij in Galatians should be interpreted, not in the subjective genitive,namely, “faithfulness of Christ”, but in the objective genitive “faith in Christ”, which is how it has been traditionally understood.
