Abstract
Paul's Argument about Faith in Galatians 2:16 Byeng-Hee Jeon (Yonsei University) The purpose of this article is to point out the limitation of the traditional approach used to understand the meaning of pistis Cristou in Galatians 2:16 through an understanding of the theological position, contextual meaning, and intertextual comparison within the Bible so that we may try to understand the text from a sociological perspective. In other words, this article aims to analyze the clues that allows us to determine the meaning of pistis Cristou through understanding of the polemical terrain in Galatians 2:16. Most importantly, Paul was in a situation where he was having disputes with others who were spreading 'a different Gospel'. As Paul was in disputes with others, we may assume that Paul did not intend the subjective genitive use of Cristou in pistis Cristou. This is because the understanding of pistis Cristou as the faith of Christ renders various possibilities of interpretations depending on the decision of what faith it is referring to or who it is aimed at. The phrase pistis Cristou is grammatically polysemous by its nature. The opponents’ assertion may also be reflected in the phrase pistis Cristou. For example, the faith of Christ can be regarded as the faith in 'Law', or the 'monotheism for Jews only.' Moreover, the faith of Christ can also be interpreted as being focused on 'God who fulfills righteousness in the law' in terms of the object. These are in discord with the position of Paul, who argues that we can become one of God’s people not through the works of the law, but through faith in Christ. In addition, it is not in accordance with Paul's argument based on the doctrine of justification, which begins with the confrontation between the works of the law and faith in Christ Then, Paul describes a situation where he experienced the Holy Spirit in the past, which is recalled for the controversial situation. Paul urges the Galatian believers to recall their past experience, when they listened to and believed in Paul’s Gospel without circumcision. Faith, in this context, is not divine faith (the faith of Christ), but human faith (the faith of believers). Given that it is human faith, there is a mutual connection between the faith in Galatians 2:16 and that in Galatians 3:2, 5. The final basis of the decision lies in Paul's way of quoting from the Bible as he was affected by the controversial situation. Paul quotes from the Old Testaments in order to advocate his own doctrine of justification. He interprets the Old Testaments in accordance with his own doctrine of justification—the justice obtained by believing in Christ—or uses it after modification.
