복잡계 패러다임으로 본 전쟁의 본질 - 용병술에 주는 함의를 중심으로 -

Abstract

The study aims to examine the essence of war through the view of complex systems paradigm and considers the implication to military art, not through the determinism paradigm of classical mechanics or the probability paradigm of quantum mechanics which were more commonly referred to in the past. The study analyzes the essence of war by using complex systems' components, such as the fractal system, strange attractor, sensibility of initial conditions, and critical phenomenon. By doing so, the study gave several results on the implication to military art. First, the principle of military operation applies to strategy, operational art, and tactics equally like the fractal system which all individual parts and the system as a whole demonstrate a singular pattern. Second, military art has a closed pattern of deception like the strange attractor. At the same time, it has an open pattern as the act of deception does not repeat in a same form. Third, according to the sensibility of initial conditions, tactical victory can supplement the incompetence of operational art, and a single action made on tactical level can directly influence not only on operational level but on strategic level. Thus, there are no priority in military art systems and victory can be achieved when strategy, operational art and tactics are harmonized intimately. Fourth, critical phenomenon occurs in war and new order is be emerged by critical state. Differentiating military operation in accordance to the changing situation can be thought as another implication of the complex systems. The complex systems has yet to be widely acknowledged within the R.O.K army, making this study an intellectual challenge. But, if examining the complex systems paradigm helps to conceive a new way to interpret the essense of war and helps to broaden to ways of approaching military operation, this article has its significance.
