Abstract

Formation of Christian Self-Identity in Corinth Jin Ki Hwang (former prof., Fuller Theological Seminary) In his letters Paul often calls his gentile converts “(the) believers”(Gal 3:22; 1 Thess 1:7; 1 Cor 1:21; 2 Cor 6:14-15, etc.). The origin of this self-designation may be explained in several different ways (e.g. OT and Judaism; Hellenism; Jesus tradition). But a careful comparison of the “faith” sayings attested in both Jesus and Paul seems to indicate that Paul’s use of “believer(s)” as a self-definitive term may have been significantly influenced by the Jesus-tradition. In the present paper, we have explored this possibility - focusing on the “faith” terms in the Gospel of Mark and 1-2 Corinthians - and tried to appreciate Paul’s pastoral efforts to shape Christian self-identity among Christ-followers in Corinth, and to advance their spiritual and moral formation.
