Abstract

The precise meaning of spe,rma auvtou in 1 John 3:9 has not yet reached at an acceptable consensus among the scholars. Roughly speaking, there are some basic options: first, spe,rma auvtou refers to ‘the children of God’; second, it denotes something like divine power remaining in the regenerated believers; otherwise, the phrase is so metaphorical that any specific referent may not be required. Yet this article refutes the validity of the first option, namely, it refers to ‘the children of God’ by articulating some grammatical and syntactical elements of v.9 including its lexical backgrounds as well. At the same time, I suggest that spe,rma auvtou in 1 John 3:9 reflects the tradition of the Catholic Epistles as regard to the close connection between ‘the regeneration of the believers’ and ‘the indwelling word of God’ as manifested in e;mfuton lo,gon of James 1:21 and spora/j avfqa, rtou of 1 Peter 1:23 as well. Critical is the element that all these three texts share the common theme of the fulfillment of new covenant for their unique expressions of the indwelling God’s word in the new covenant people of God. Further, 1 John 3:9 along with its near and far contexts presents spe,rma auvtou as the integral principle for both of the believers’ regeneration and sanctification. This contextual and theological nexus of spe,rma auvtou can be systematically and effectively explained in terms of the fulfillment of the new covenant, such as ‘the law written in the heart’(Jer 31:33), ‘the indwelling Spirit of God’(Ezek 36:26-27), ‘new people of God obeying the God’s law’(Ezek 36:27; 37:24; Jer 31:33). In light of this, the another puzzling expression of 1 John 3:9, that is, ‘the children of God do not sin and are not able to do it’ can also be understood in terms of both of the ‘already’ and ‘not yet’ aspects of the fulfillment of ‘the indwelling God’s word’ of the new covenant. In addition, the new covenant fulfillment pattern of spe,rma auvtou is further ratified by the repeated chain of motifs such as ‘the attornment, indwelling word, and the knowledge of God’ as part of the new covenant theme, and also by the dualistic structure set up between the children of God and the world as well. Conclusively, spe,rma auvtou of 1 John 3:9 can be and should be specified as ‘the indwelling word of God wrought by the Holy Spirit’ according to the promises of the new covenant. Above all, this confirms another evidence pointing towards the Catholic Epistles’ tendency to depict the rebirth of the eschatological new people of God particularly by the terms of the indwelling of the word of God that overcomes the ko,smoj.
