Abstract
Compared with other New Testament letters’ structure, 1 Peter is unique due to its paraenetic features throughout the whole letter. There has been no consensus among scholars with regard to the understanding of the structure of 1 Peter due to the vagueness of the boundary between theological statements of the believers’ identity and exhortations. The epistolary approach to 1 Peter has merely focused on merely examining the origins of this writing and epistolary functions assigned to each constituent part in the light of the ancient letter’s type, style, form, etc. Unfortunately, scholars’ failure to notice the internal coherency could result in a misunderstanding of the structure of 1 Peter. Particularly, when discussing the introductory and body parts, some scholars have assumed that the body of the letter begins at 1:13 because after the conjunction διό imperative forms intensively occurred. In response to the scholars’ assertion, this study aims to argue that 1:13-25 cannot be separated in light of a structural and logical perspective and this part belongs to a coherent paraenetic introduction. To prove this, this study examines that Peter’s theological statement and his paraenesis in 1:3-25 are coherently interwoven.
