Abstract

This thesis conducted its research targeting the literary criticism of CHOI Yin-hoon and aimed to understand the meanings of art which would experience self-identity and the dualism of a language in order to look into a process of one’s seeking literature of one’s times. First of all, the literary criticism of CHOI Yin-hoon is believed to contain the ontological exploration of literature and art. In this all civilized modern society, humans form their self-identities as overcoming a sense of anxiety and fear which they experience from their consciousness’s being separated from behaviors. This kind of fantasy to solve issues of the humans and create this happiness without suppression is called art that shows the completion of human evolution. In addition, art is understood as a ‘promised fantasy’ which makes the impossible of a life and a history possible. When it comes to the true art, it is considered an act which would fantastically fulfill desires of the humans who have been dreaming of a getaway while they are locked up and have been craving for the infinite when they are still finite beings. Next, the criticism of CHOI Yin-hoon focuses on the dualism of a language and recognizes literature of adventures, which would look for new forms, from the context of the spirit of the times. As both the most fundamental memory and the myth of the spirit of the humans, not only does the language function as a storing place of all experiences but also works with the dualistic structure of a method and a custom. The touch with the reality caused by the balance between the method and the unstable anxiety of the custom leads the adventurous spirit seeking a literary form of one’s times to create new literature. A parody of a traditional style when a new literary form has not been yet discovered can be regarded not only as a criticism of the traditional customs but also as a result earned by the absence of the method for the customs of the times.
