Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the foreign policy of Goguryeo toward Silla and the political trend in Silla in the early 5th century from various angles. For this, this article especially focused on the process of accession of King Silsung and King Nulji. It is a matter of common knowledge that Silla was threatened by the invasion of Japan in the year 399 and requested military aid to Goguryeo. In examining the East Asian international relations of the time, it was the most reasonable judgment from Silla's standpoint but resulted in a double-edged sword. King Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo sent troops and repelled Japanese military but the political influence of Goguryeo on Shilla increased thereafter. In the year 401, Goguryeo repatriated Silsung to Silla, who had been held hostage. In the situation where Nulji, the son of King Namul, was supposed to take over the throne, the release of the husband of King Namul's wife's sister caused confusion in Silla increasingly. Silsung eventually came to the throne with the support of Goguryeo and Silla became more subordinate to Goguryeo than before. After his accession, King Silsung sought to strengthen his kingship by securing internal supporters and focusing on military. On the other hand, Nulji had a superior internal foundation in Silla to King Silsung's and devoted himself to external affairs. As a result, Nulji also managed to get supports from Goguryo since the time when King Jangsu ascended the throne. Like this, the power base of King Silsung and King Nulji appeared in the opposite direction and finally, King Nulji expanded the scope of foreign relations based on the internal legitimacy. And he eventually seized power. In conclusion, the crowning process of King Silsung and King Nulji and political conflict among them show interrelationship between international relations and domestic politic in the early 5th century.
