이 연구는 19세기 중엽에서 1920년대 초까지 중국의 지식인이 서양의 민주 제도를 표상하는 방식을 주로 개념의 분석이라는 방식으로 살펴보고자 한다. 청말 민국 초기의 지식인들이 서양의 democracy에 관심을 갖고 이야기하는 과정은 그러한 제도를 운영하는 서양을 이해하는 과정이면서, 동시에 이러한 제도가 왜 중국에 필요하고 종래의 군주제가 어떤 문제를 지니고 있는지를 물어가는 내적 반성의 과정이기도 하다. 서양을 이해하기 위해서는 유교의 정치 이념이 자주 동원되고 활용되었다. 따라서 이 연구는 서양의 정치체제를 둘러싼 당시 지식인들의 지적 담론을 분석하면서, 민주를 정당화하는 논리, 의회 제도를 긍정하는 논리, ‘민주’에서 표상된 민의 정치적 위상과 군주와의 관계, 나아가 유교적 민본주의와 서양의 민주주의 사이의 간극 등을 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explore the way which Chinese intellectuals express Western democratic institutions from the mid 19th century to 1920’, mainly from the perspective of a conceptual history. It can be said that a process of Chinese intellectuals’ concerns with the Western democracy is to understand the western that runs such a system, at the same time to reflect internally for why such a system requires in China and what problems the traditional monarchy have. To understand the West, the political ideology of Confucianism were adopted and utilized frequently. Therefore, this study is intented to explain Chinese intellectuals’ logic of justifying the western democratic system and Congress, the people’s political right represented by democracy, the relationship between the King and the people, examining the modern Chinese intellectual’s discourses on the Western polity.
