태평양 전쟁 경험과 호주의 6·25전쟁 참전 - 싱가폴 전략 실패 이후 호주의 국제관계 인식변화를 중심으로 -

본 논문에서는 호주에게 있어 6·25전쟁 참전이 지니는 의미에 대해 검토하였다. 북한의 남침을 전후한 호주군의 참전 결정과정에 집중하기 보다, 호주가 ‘왜 한반도에서의 갈등에 그토록 적극적으로 개입하게 되었는가’라는 보다 본원론적 질문을 중심으로, 영국의 자치령이 아닌 ‘독립국가 호주’의 참전동기에 초점을 맞추고논의를 전개한 것이다. 이를 위해 태평양 전쟁을 전후한 호주의 안보 정체성 확립및 변화과정을 영국의 싱가폴 전략과 영연방점령군의 형성 및 운영과 연계하여 살펴보았다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 논문에서는 호주의 ‘적극적이고 헌신적인’ 6·25전쟁참전은 표면적으로 영연방점령군 운영에 대한 호주의 강력한 의지로부터 설명될 수 있으며, 보다 본질적으로는 태평양 전쟁을 거치며 경험한 싱가폴 전략의 실패로부터기인하였다고 주장하였다. 특히 호주의 6·25전쟁 참전원인을 이해하기 위해 태평양 전쟁 이전 시점까지 분석의 시점을 확장할 필요가 있음을 기술하였다.
Abstract
This thesis examines the meanings of the Australia’s participation of the Korean War. It particularly focuses on her fundamental motivations, rather than the Royal Australian Forces’ decision making process for the participation and deployment to Korea, by asking ‘why Australia was so actively committed in the Korean Conflict.’ In doing so, it seeks to explore the changing process of Australia’s perception of their security and national interest before and after the outbreak of the crisis in the Pacific Region, by deeply analyzing the two cases― ‘the evolution and demise of the Singapore Strategy’ and ‘development of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces(BCOF) in Japan”. Based on these examinations, this thesis argues that the Australian Forces’ active and passionate participation in the Korean War primarily came from their strong will to maintain the BCOF in Japan, and more profoundly originated from the lessons learned from the failure of ‘the Singapore Strategy’ during the Pacific War
