“화교”, “외적화인”, “화교화인” 명칭 분석: 국가이익의 투영을 중심으로

이름을 부여한다는 것은 단순한 명명의 행위를 넘어, 대상에 대한 인식이며, 그 대상과의 소통을 통해 관계를 맺어가는 첫 번째 과정이다. 이에 특정 대상이 특정 이름으로 호명된다는 것은, 곧 그 이름이 해당 대상의 본질을 규정하기 시작했음을 의미한다. 그러한 관점에서 본 연구는 문헌 분석의 방법을 통해 “화교”, “외적화인”, “화교화인” 등 명칭의 출현 배경과 과정, 그리고 이에 투영된 중국의 국가이익을 살펴보았다. 19세기 말 중국 근대화라는 국가이익은 중국 이민자를 “화교”라고 호명했고, 이에 “화교”는 스스로가 해외의 중국인임을 자각하며 중국 근대화의 견인차가 되었다; 1980년대 초, 중국 개혁개방이라는 국가이익은 “중국혈통의 외국 국적자”를 “외적화인”이라고 호명했고, 이에 “외적화인”은 중국의 필요를 충족시키면서 개혁개방의 마중물이 되었다; “화교”와 “외적화인”의 병렬조합이던 “화교, 화인”은 학술계와 매체, 그리고 최고 권력자의 발언 등을 통해 “화교화인”으로 대체되었다. 이는 정치적·법률적 신분이 다른 “화교”와 “외적화인”을 하나의 묶음으로 만들고, 이를 “중화민족”의 일원으로 자각시키겠다는 중국의 국가이익이 반영되어 있다.
Abstract
Giving a name is not just an act of naming, it is recognition of an object, and it is the first process of establishing a relationship through communication with that object. Thus, when a specific object is called a specific name, it means that the name has begun to define the nature of the object. From that perspective, this study looked at the background and process of the appearance of “Huaqiao(华侨)”, “Waijihuaren(外籍华人)”, and “Huaqiaohuaren(华侨华人)” names through the method of literature analysis, and China's national interest projected on them. The national interest of “modernization in China” at the end of the 19th century called Chinese immigrants “Huaqiao”, so “Huaqiao” became the driving force of modernization in China, realizing that it was a Chinese citizen abroad; In the early 1980s, the national interest of China's “Reform and opening-up” called the “foreign national of Chinese blood” “Waijihuaren”, and “Waijihuaren” became the priming water for “reform and opening-up” by rebuilding relations with China; “Huaqiao, Huaren”, a parallel combination of “Huaqiao” and “Waijihuaren”, was replaced by “Huaqiaohuaren” through Ideological State Apparatus. This was China's national interest to make them aware of them as members of the “Chinese Nation(中华民族)” by making them a subject of action beyond the difference between “Huaqiao” and “Waijihuaren”.
