Abstract

Choi Seungja's first poetry, Love in this age, is full of images of death. And this image of death comes from suicidal desire. Freud argued that the main symptom of melancholia is self-punishment, which appears as a desire for suicide. This theory of Freud 's melancholia can be a clue to the elucidation of the suicidal desire of Choi Seung - Ja. Freud saw sorrow and melancholia as having much in common. Both sorrow and melancholia are caused by the loss of loved objects. According to him, most people overcome the sense of loss by withdrawing the libido from the lost object or diverting it to another object. However Libido that fails to withdraw or redirect the libido to the subject eventually returns to himself. However, the self passes the responsibility of the loss of object to the object. But the object is already identified with the ego back to itself. Therefore, the punishment for the object is the same as for the self. As a result, the punishment for the object becomes self-punishment. This is the typical process of Freud's alleged melancholia.
