복수영화는 IMF사태 이후 한국영화의 강력한 흐름으로 부상했다. 복수영화중에는 대중과 비평의 호응을 얻은 영화들이 적지 않다. 포스트IMF기에 우리는 왜 복수(영화)에 끌린 것일까? 복수영화는 외상적 상실을 당한 주인공이 복수를 실행한다는 내러티브 하부구조를 공유한다. 복수의 내러티브는 외상적 상실로 교란당했던 상징계가 특정 가해자를 제거함으로써 회복되는 것이다. 그것은우리로 하여금 사회에는 여전히 정의가 존재한다고 여기도록 하며, 그러므로 살만하다고 현실의 삶을 긍정하고 지속하게 하는 상징적 근거를 제공한다. 복수는 외상적 실재와 대면한 주인공이 그 외상성을처리하고 정상적인 삶을 되찾기 위해 대응하는 방식인 것이다. 포스트IMF기는 한국 복수영화의 비옥한 토양이었다. 이 시기 우리는 진보에 대한 믿음, 미래에 대한 낙관을 상실했고 우호적인 세계와그런 세계에서 가능했던 주체감이라는 근본적 환상의 동요를 체험했다. IMF사태는 지울 수 없는 상처를 남긴 역사적 외상이었다.
Abstract
Revenge films have surged forcibly in the post-IMF Korean cinema, garnering popular and critical support. Why then have Koreans been attracted to those violent revenge films? Revenge narrative tells of a restoration of the symbolic which was disrupted by the loss through the elimination of the perpetrator, reestablishing a fundamental fantasy to believe in social justice and to continue to live with hope. In the post-IMF era Koreans experienced a jolt of fundamental fantasies which make us believe in a favorable world and provide us with a sense of subjecthood within it, and were forced to discard the myth of progress. The IMF Crisis has been an indelible historical trauma. Given that, Korean revenge films can be seen as an attempt to identify the traumaticity of our socio-historical losses and frustrations and to process them symbolically. They are a powerful cultural ‘idiom’ to represent and to allegorize the historical trauma and to reestablish the sense of subjecthood and the meaningfulness of the world for us.
