Abstract

This paper has three main purposes. Firstly, it examines the features of a South Korean film, Marines Are Gone(1963) and a North Korean film, Wolmi Island(1982) in relation to war films. Both films represent Battle of Incheon in 1950. Marines Are Gone treats this battle in the opening sequence of the film. On the contrary, Wolmi Island totally focuses on the North Korean Army which fights desperately for defending against the enemy. However, the films use the heroism of war film. Furthermore, these films express humanity and brotherhood through male bonding. In addition, the films represent 'the last stand'through self-sacrifice as the convention of war film. Secondly, this study explores the way of representing the nationality. It seems that Marines Are Gone avoids the problem of the nationality. Particularly, this film treats as the enemy not North Korean Army but Chinese Communist Army. By contrast, Wolmi Island treats Kim Il-Sung, ‘the Father’ the same as the nation. In other words, the thing which North Korean Army defends the nation is the same as defending Kim Il-Sung. Thirdly, the paper illustrates the political, historical backgroundwhich both films are connected to South and North Korea's regimes. Marines Are Gone was produced in the early years of the Park Chung Hee Administration in the early 1960s. At that time, Park Administration did not fully strengthen the basis of political power yet. Therefore,Marines Are Gone is distinguished with war films as ‘national policy film’ produced in the 1970s' Yushin regime. Conversely, Wolmi Island has a strong association with the thing which Kim Il-Sung's ‘the monolithic leadership system’ has been strengthened since the 1970s.
