Abstract

It is difficult to discuss North Korean cinema without its propagandistic nature, and this is even more so for war cinema which strengthens communal solidarity by boosting morale and clearly defining the enemy. However, the refined and entertaining aspects that can be discussed in normal war cinema are deemed peripheral or easily overlooked in North Korean cinema studies. This study has extracted the following characteristics of North Korean war cinema by comparing the depiction of the Inchon Landing Operation in South and North Korean war films: First, the operation, which North Korea takes particular interest in and could be remembered as a defeat, is remembered as a victory in order to induce historical memory and the masses’ consciousness. Second, recalling the memory of the lost space that is Inchon summons memories of the Korean War while reiterating the war’s significance. That is, the films sublimate the tragic beauty of war in order to remember itnot as a tragedy, but a heroic endeavor. Third, the films always remind the audience that the enemy is not South Korea, but the United States. Diverging from traditional Stalinist notions of the ethnic-nation, this shows the transitional nature of North Korea’s views which allowed the possibility of embracing South Korea as part of the same ethnic-nation. Fourth, these movies are not only emotionally touching, but feature spectacular dogfights and action scenes, along with musical elements, for entertainment. This can be understood in the context ofthe films emphasizing inminsŏng(popularity). Inminsŏng as a concept combines mass appeal and peoplehood, and its emphasis shows that North Korean films, like any other film, cannot overlook mass appeal and entertainment. As a method of remembering history and maximizing entertainment, North Korean war cinema universalizes the North Korean context and contributes to understanding the country.
