아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤의 <메모리아>에 구성된 기억의 터와 물화에 관한 연구*

삶과 죽음이 하나이듯이 기억과 망각도 별개가 아니다. 인간은 누구나살아가면서 죽어가고, 기억하면서 망각한다. 물론 그 반대의 경우도 있다. 그래서 삶, 죽음, 기억, 망각은 영화의 오래된 소재들이기도 하다. 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤 감독의 <메모리아(Memoria)>(2021)는 일상적인 기억의 터에서 음원이나 실체가 불명확한 소리(풍경)와 관련된 기억의 자취와흔적을 찾아가는 여정을 그리고 있다. 이 논문은 <메모리아>를 분석대상으로 선정해 현대 자본주의 사회의 기억의 터에서 불가피하게 인위적으로 구성되는 기억의 논제를 기억의 물화의 과정과 결과가 갖는 함의를바탕으로 탐구하고자 했다. 연구결과에 의하면, <메모리아>의 주요 영화적 공간인 일상의 기억의터에서 들려오는 미지의 소리는 청음 안테나의 역할을 하는 제시카 홀랜드의 기억이 기억의 저장장치 역할을 하는 에르난 베도야(청년과 중년 모두) 에 의해 발신된 것이다. 이 정체를 알 수 없는 소리풍경의 기억은 현대 자본주의 사회에서 이익을 극대화하기 위한 도구적 이성의 산물이자 상품으로서의 기억의 가치를 제고하는 물화된 기억이다. 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤 감독은 실체가 불분명한 소리풍경의 기억을 통해 자본(잉여)이 창출하는 물질문명의 물화에 대한 욕망과 이로 인해 야기되는 불안과 소외의심각성을 비판하고 있다. 이 논문은 고통스러울 수밖에 없는 기억 행위의 의미를 탐구했다는데 점에 연구의의를 두고자 한다.
Abstract
Just as life and death are one, memory and oblivion are not separate. Everyone lives and dies somewhere, and remembers and forgets. Of course, there are also cases where it is the opposite. Therefore, life, death, memory, and oblivion are relatively common subjects that movies deal with. Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's <Memoria> (2021) depicts a journey to find traces and evidences of memories related to sound sources or sounds (scape) of unclear substance in the everyday sites of memory. This paper selected <Memoria> as the subject of analysis and attempted to explore the topic of memory that is inevitably artificially constructed in the memory space of modern capitalist society based on the implications of the process and results of the reification of memory. According to the research results, the unknown sound heard in the everyday sites of memory, the main cinematic space of <Memoria>, is transmitted by Jessica Holland's memory, which acts as an auditory antenna, and Hernán Bedoya (both young and middle-aged), which acts as a memory storage device. This unidentifiable soundscape memory is a product of instrumental reason to maximize profits in modern capitalist society, and a reified memory that enhances the value of memory as a commodity. Through the memory of the unidentifiable soundscape, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul criticizes the desire for the reification of material civilization created by capital (surplus) and the severity of anxiety and alienation caused by it. The significance of this paper is that it explores the meaning of the act of remembering, which is bound to be painful.
