Abstract

Through the new idea of ‘History-Image’, this study examines the relationship between image and memory or history, concentrating on what film image implies in Sunless. I investigate the ontological meaning of film as record and memory and also as an archive, that is, the ontological historicity of image, by researching the history-image, which is beyond the dichotomy between memory and history. Starting with fragmentation in Sunless by Chris Marker, this paper examines the role of footage in film. The film's fragmentary feature offers the foundation for footage to be combined into the film. Also, footage, which has fragmentarity, fluidity, and image in common with memory, is a suitable place to think about film's ontological historicity. The new existence as the ‘twilight zone’ or ‘history as becoming’ in-between space is achieved through film, which overcomes the dichotomy between memory and history. ‘Assemblage’, made of the collage of different footage, creates collective memory as ‘history’ while becoming overcoming historicism. The ontological historicity of film suggests us an important thought of what film can do, according to Marker's belief in Sunless that the images that substitute our memories become collective memory, and that the deformation of the past images and the alteration of the relation between images will lead to the change of the present images, spectators, and the change for the future.
