정지용 시에 나타난 절망과 극복 양상

본고는 정지용 시에 나타난 절망의 내면구조를 분석하였다. 정지용의 시를 초기시, 중기시, 후기시로 나눌 때, 모든 시기의 작품에서 절망의식은 직간접적으로 나타난다. 정지용의 절망 원인을 분석해 보면 유랑의 운명 혹은 문명의 모순과 관련되는 경우가 많았다. 본고는 정지용 시의 절망을 세 가지 층위로 나누어 살펴보았다. ‘2. 유랑의 운명과 절망의 태동’에서는 정지용의 초기시에 나타난 절망에 관하여 논의하였다. 정지용에게 유랑은 선택이라기보다는 운명에 더 가깝다. 그는 유랑의 운명 속에서 다양한 방식의 절망에 빠져들게 된다. ‘3. 문명의 모순과 절망의 심연’에서는 정지용의 중기시에 나타난 절망에 관하여 논의하였다. 정지용은 새로운 근대 문명이 급속도로 발전하는 시기를 살았다. 그런데 문명은 정지용에게 희망이 되는 경우보다 절망이 되는 경우가 더 많았다. 문명의 모순과 위선은 정지용이 더 큰 절망에 빠져들게 만들었다. ‘4. 근원적 지평과 절망의 숭고’에서는 정지용의 후기시에 나타난 절망에 관하여 논의하였다. 후기시는 절망 자체에 관한 형상화라기보다는 절망을 극복해 나가는 과정과 방법에 관한 형상화이다. 이것은 근원적 지평을 향한 숭고한 일체화와 연결된다. 정지용의 삶과 문학은 역동적인 구조를 지니고 있었다. 옥천에서 태어나서 서울을 체험하고, 교토 유학을 한 후 다시 서울에서 살아가면서 겪었던 파란만장한 경험 속에 깃든 시인의 절망은 그의 문학 세계에 고스란히 배어 있었다.
Abstract
This paper analyzed the inner structure of despair that appeared in Jeong Ji-yong’s poetry. When Jeong Ji-yong’s poetry are divided into early, middle, and late poetry, the sense of despair appears directly or indirectly in works from all periods. Analyzing the cause of Jeong Ji-yong’s despair, there were many cases related to the fate of the nomad or the contradiction of civilization. This paper examined the despair of Jeong Ji-yong’s poetry by dividing it into three layers. In ‘2. The Fate of a Wandering and the Beginning of Despair’, we discussed the despair that appeared in Jeong’s early days. For Jeong, a Wandering is more of a fate than his choice. He falls into despair in various ways amid the fates of a Wandering. In ‘3. The Paradox of Civilization and the Abyss of Despair’, we discussed the despair that appeared in Jung Ji-yong’s middle poetry. Jeong Ji-yong lived in a period of rapid development of a new modern civilization. However, civilization was more likely to become hopeless than to become hopeful for Jeong. The contradictions and hypocrisy of civilization made Jeong fall into even greater despair. In ‘4. The Fundamental Horizon and the Sublime of Despair’, we discussed the despair that appeared in Jeong Ji-yong’s later poetry. The later poetry is not about despair itself, but rather about the process and method of overcoming despair. This is connected to the sublime unity towards the fundamental horizon. Jeong Ji-yong’s life and literature had a dynamic structure. Born in Okcheon, he experienced Seoul, studied in Kyoto, and then lived in Seoul again, the poet’s despair was ingrained in his literary world.
