Abstract
This study explores the process of self-transformation in middle-aged Korean women from the perspective of Carol Gilligan's ethics of care. Based on its analysis, it suggests pastoral counseling implications. Rather than treating midlife crises as psychological issues, this study views them through relational context, inherent uniqueness, and subjectivity. It proposes a pastoral counseling approach that considers not only individual psychology but also social systems. This study analyzes the process of self-formation, maintenance, and transformation through a case study of a middle-aged woman (M). The results reveal: First, middle-aged women are active agents who reinterpret their lives through reflective thinking and actively pursue change. Second, the transformation experienced by middle-aged women also has the potential to affect others around them, suggesting the possibility of mutual transformation within the pastoral counseling process. While traditional counseling primarily focuses on resolving individual psychological issues, this study emphasizes relational and sociocultural contexts. This perspective shows that pastoral counseling can be more than just problem-solving; it can become a space for relational healing and growth based on equality and mutuality. This study contributes to expanding the existing discussions on the selfhood of middle-aged women and proposes an integrated approach to pastoral counseling based on the ethics of care.
