Abstract
This study analyzes the effectiveness of the income-led growth which has emerged as a plausible solution to the low growth and high inequality. Specifically, this paper measures three labor shares of income of 16 metropolitan governments from 2000 to 2016 based on the criteria of (i) Bank of Korea, (ii) labor income, and (iii) revised OECD. After that, it is estimated that the impacts of labor share of income on economic growth rate denoted by the annual growth rate of GRDP. The distribution of the labor shares of income based on the three criteria varies depending on how the income of the self-employed owner is adjusted, and there is a large difference among the metropolitan areas. The empirical results provide somehow clear. That is, the share of labor income of one year before, adjusted for any form of self-employment income, is estimated to have a statistically significant positive impact on the current economic growth rate. Also, the impact is relatively large in 7 cities compared to 9 provinces. These results suggest that income-led growth can operate with some time-lag and may be different depending on the economic characteristics of each area.
