Abstract

This article examines if we can apply the neo-functionalist concept of spillover effect onto the European football area. This theoretical concept has been frequently applied to the interaction of policies, but not to the activities of civil society such as football with minimal state intervention. The development of football which began in the mid-19th century England has expanded to the European continent during the 20th century. First, the organization of a competition space at the European level dates from the 1950’s. Then, this space has interacted with the formation of the Single market in the 1990’s which entailed a deep transformation of European football. As a result, Europe has become a center of a world network of football players provoking at the same time reactions to maintain the identity dimension of this sport. Finally, we discuss the theoretical ramifications of spillover effect as applied to the historical case of European football.
