Abstract
The development of UEFA goes beyond the growth of a mere sports organization and is closely intertwined with the broader process of European integration. In the context of efforts to ensure stability and peace in Europe after World War II, UEFA played a crucial role in maintaining the unity of European football despite political tensions between the Eastern and Western blocs. Initially established as an independent sports organization, UEFA underwent significant institutional changes, particularly with the 1995 Bosman ruling and the introduction of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations in 2009, forging a closer relationship with the EU. This study examines the theoretical background and previous research by analyzing European integration theories such as neofunctionalism, liberal intergovernmentalism, and social constructivism. Based on this framework, it traces UEFA’s institutional development over time and explores its interactions with the EU. Through this analysis, the study highlights the complex and dynamic role of sports in the process of European integration.
