Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy and development of the Danish People's Party, based on the concept of post-populism. Post-populism is the recent trend of populism that accepts the idea of representative democracy to become a parliamentary party and further attempts normalization by advocating individualism rather than collectivism. This article argues that the cases of the Danish People's Party can contribute to the conceptualization of post-populism. The Danish People's Party, founded in 1995, joined the right-wing coalition government in the 2000s while advocating welfare nationalism and actively embraced the idea of freedom of speech to consolidate its status as a mainstream political party. However, the party was largely defeated in the Danish general election of 2019, mainly because of the growing influence of environmental issues, the rightward shift of the Social Democratic Party, and the emergence of a new far-right party. Therefore, the Danish case reveals that post-populist parties, with their aggression against immigrants, are too limited in their ambition to be converted into full-fledged mainstream parties.
