Abstract
This study aims to identify the factors that may influence the wages of foreign workers, using survey data on living conditions among foreign workers and the employment of foreign laborer in Korea. From human capital theory and social network theory, the relevant determinants of wages are derived. This study employs the Heckman’s ordered probit model to eliminate sample selection problems. According to the empirical results, the wages of foreign workers are positively associated with personal human capital formed in the home country such as educational background and expert skills. Also, the wages of foreign workers are positively related to personal human capital formed in Korea such as period of employment in the same industry, experience of turnover and duration of stay in Korea. The interesting finding is that personal human capital formed in the home country than Korea has a greater impact on the wages of foreign workers, which is different from the results of previous studies. The difference seems to result from the fact that foreign workers have little chance of developing their human capital in Korea. Meanwhile, in line with previous research, personal social networks by parents and siblings have a positive effect on the wages of foreign workers. These findings provide policy implications for creating a substantial vision for the demand and supply of foreign workforce.
