초록
The paper briefly surveys the current geopolitical situation in which Korean is found: two “political” dialects in the North and the South, 7 million emigrants in some 130 countries speaking Korean (transplanted language), and a few million learning Korean as a foreign language. The paper then reviews the problems and prospects of the divided and pleuricentric Korean, from diversification to reunification, from simplification to standardization. It continues to outline some challenges the language faces as it is undergoing a rapid transformation in the age of information and multiculturalism, e.g., influx of foreign words, simplified internet language, reductionism in the young generation, etc. The author presents a few proposals to meet these challenges, to do a balancing act so that the language may preserve its unity and identity, and to become a global language not only as a transplanted language but also as an implanted language, that is, a language implanted in foreigners’ consciousness so that it becomes an object of learning and study by them.
