This article analyses foreign schools in Korea such as Xavier International School,Seoul Mongolian School and Seoul German School as language policy spaces andsecured the data through in-depth interviews and classroom observations. We applied alanguage policy theory, named Structural Approach to Language PolicySpaces(SALPS), in which revealed individual structures of the foreign schools werecompared in order to understand the general structure and the characteristics of eachschool. The mother country and native language status were found to be importantstructural factors that determine the language policy structure of foreign schools. Thebackground of language ideology of nationalism was observed to be one factor thatcontrols this realistic side. Despite the long distance, it was shown that the system oflanguage policy of the mother country can almost overlap with the language policyframework of foreign language school. Structural understanding of the language policyof foreign schools can help improve the efficiency of language policies of thenation-state. With the explanatory power of SALPS reaffirmed, we expect that thistheory might be further expanded to a structural theory of culture.
