초록
In Korea, Chinese characters and Hangeul are in a mutually cooperative relationship, each playing out its separate roles in various contexts. This paper is to examine some of the alternative functions of Chinese characters found in various contexts in contemporary Korean society. Such new functions of Chinese characters could be divided into two groups: the acceptable usage and the other as the unacceptable usage of Chinese characters. -. Acceptable usage. To distinguish homonym. To clarify the meaning of difficult or unfamiliar words. To put more information within a limited space. To add an archaic style. For confidential use. -. Unacceptable usage. To deliver multiple meanings. To attract readers’ attention. It is very interesting to note that while Hangeul is the predominant form of writing in Korea Chinese characters do not seem to fade away and instead it is deploying additional functions in society.
