Abstract
Translations of a work as iconic and monumental as Dante's Divine Comedy cannot afford to take liberties with the form and content of the original, even when various doctrines of modern translation studies are summoned to ease the pressure of the original on translators. Translation of poetry can at best or even primarily aspire to be a creative re-writing rather than a faithful rendering, some theorists say, but in the case of Dante, the license of the translators is bound to be restrained by the immense cultural capital the masterpiece has accumulated for centuries, and curtailed by the unique technical features of the original. The rhyme scheme of terza rima deployed through terzina that permeates Divine Comedy was invented by Dante himself and practised with an unparalleled expertise. It is the single most important structural device of Divine Comedy and a crucial key to unlocking the spirit and intent of the author. The problem for his modern translators, however, is that while terzina can be followed with relative ease, terza rima is all but impossible to replicate in a language other than that of Dante. French translators have sought to recreate in their language some parts of the rigorous rhyme scheme of Dante with a modest degree of success. Those translating the work into English have largely evaded it. Some seek to match the order of terzina and to sustain some metrical regularity germane to English verse. Dante’s terza rima, being a device both phonetic and semantic, calls for a translation that honors the position of the rhyme word in the line, to which the stress always falls according to the hendecasillabo rules refined by Dante. This degree of fidelity to the original at least is what translations into languages even further removed from Italian than French or English, such as Korean, can yet seek to maintain.
