Abstract
There are few works that test and give translators a hard time like Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’. The biggest reason is that it requires a considerable amount of encyclopedic knowledge. ‘Divine Comedy’ is a comprehensive collection of knowledge from medieval Europe. It is difficult to follow Dante's journey to the underworld without understanding hundreds of characters, numerous historical events and episodes, legends, classical mythology, medieval philosophy and theology, astronomy and geography, etc. That is why most editions, whether original or translated, have many translations and commentary added. Additionally, ‘Divine Comedy’ features various allegories, metaphors, and polysemous expressions. In addition, the musicality and rhythm utilizing verse forms such as three-line study (terzina), rhyme (rima), and 11-syllable verse (endecasillabo) contribute to the artistry of the work. A good translation should, of course, take all of these into account and meet them as best as possible. However, unfortunately, there is no such translation in our country yet. In this article I would like to consider these specific problems and propose solutions to some of them.
