오늘날 금융부문의 괄목할만한 성장과 중요성 증대는 현대자본주의의 변화를 추동하는 주요한 힘으로 작용하고 있으며, 이러한 경향성을 포착하기 위해 등장한 개념이 바로 ‘금융화’(financialization)이다. 금융화는 현단계 자본축적의 속도와 양상을 결정하는데 있어 금융부문이 결정적인 역할을 한다는 점을 강조하기 위해 제안된 것이며, 현대자본주의의 동학을 개인, 기업, 거시경제가 금융시장과 맺게되는 새로운 관계를 매개로 설명하는 방식을 의미한다. 본 연구는 이러한 인식에 기반하여 금융화 현상의 경험적 근거들과 내용을 살펴보고, 그것이 내포하는 이론적·경험적 쟁점들을 검토하는데 주된 목적을 둔다. 특히, 금융주도적 축적체제 논쟁, 금융부문과 실물경제의 관계, 금융화의 한국적 특수성을 집중적으로 고찰하였다. 연구의 결과, 금융화 경향성은 금융부문, 비금융기업, 가계 및 정부부문, 경제 전체에서 뚜렷하게 확인되었지만, 독자적인 축적체제로의 성립가능성에는 회의적인 평가가 지배적이었다. 그리고 금융화는 실물경제에 부정적인 효과가 우세한 가운데, 축적의 유연성·확장성의 측면에서는 긍정적 가능성도 내포하고 있었다. 마지막으로, 한국에서의 금융화는 아직 제한적이며 영미권의 금융화와는 다른 특수성을 지니는 것으로 분석되었다.
Abstract
As financial markets and agents have acquired an increasingly prominent position in the economy, the concept of ‘financialization’ have been paid attention to for understanding these transformations of contemporary capitalism. Financialization is defined as a pattern of accumulation in which profits accrue primarily through financial channels rather than commodity production. It provides an account of capitalist dynamics where individuals, firms, and the macro-economy are mediated by new relationship with financial sectors. This study attempts to examine empirical evidences and various contesting issues on financialization. Especially, I focus to review critically the debates on the ‘finance-led regime of accumulation’, the relationship between financial economy and real economy, and exceptional features of financialization in Korea.
