Abstract

This study examines whether non-linearities between the growth rates of employment and GDP exist in Korea. The results of an analysis using a smooth transition error correction model (ST-ECM) show that the growth rates of employment and GDP are cointegrated in the long run. The short-run effect of GDP growth on the employment growth rate was larger during a recession than during a boom. However, the conditional forecast of the growth rate of employment showed no consistent evidence that the ST-ECM outperformed the linear model.
