Abstract

The commercialization of scientific discoveries can lead to successful innovation in Biotechnology. This paper aims to identify factors that relate to researchers’ propensity to engage in the commercialization of their discoveries. Using a large dataset of Korean researchers in Biotechnology, we study several commercialization activities, such as patenting, consulting, start-up development, and technology transfers, and we investigate the impact of individual attributes of researchers, as well as the amount of resources devoted to research and the impact of academic culture on researchers’ propensity towards commercialization. Our main findings show that experience and individual attitude towards commercialization impact significantly the likelihood to participate in commercialization activities. Also, male researchers are more likely to participate in commercialization.
