엘리자베스 키스의 작품에 재현된 일제강점기 조선 여성 이미지의 특성 연구

본 연구에서는 20세기 손꼽히는 판화가인 엘리자베스 키스(Elizabeth Keith, 1887-1956)의 작품과 사료들을 검토하여 조선 여성 이미지의 특성을 분석하였다. 엘리자베스 키스는 일제강점기 동안 네 차례(1919년, 1921년, 1934년, 1936 년) 조선을 방문하여 조선인과의 진솔한 대화를 통하여 그들의 삶과 문화를 객관적으로 이해하려고 노력했던 화가이다. 또한 일제강점기의 역사적 특성을 의식하면서 조선인의 모습을 사실적으로 재현했다는 점에서 그 의의가 크다. 그럼에도 불구하고 키스가 남긴 사료와 작품에 대한 종합적 분석이 아직 학계에서시도된 바가 전무하다. 본 연구에서는 서양인과 일제에 의해 왜곡된 조선 여성의 대표적인 이미지를살펴보고, 일제강점기 동안 조선을 방문했던 키스의 작품에 재현된 조선 여성이미지가 어떠한 특성으로 재현되었는지 고찰했다. 그럼으로써 키스가 오리엔탈리즘적인 시선이 아닌 객관적인 사실에 근거하여 조선 여성의 이미지를 재현한 차별화된 의식의 화가였음을 보여주고자 시도했다. 키스의 작품에 재현된 조선 여성의 이미지는 정형화된 인물들이 아닌 개성과 정체성을 지닌 개인으로존재하고 있다. 즉 키스가 묘사한 조선 여성은 낯선 동양인이 아니라 조선의 문화를 이해하려는 작가의 노력과 공감이 바탕이 되어 이미지로 재현되는 양상을보였다는 점에서 의미가 깊다.
Abstract
In this study, I analyzed the characteristics of the images of Joseon women by examining the art works, books, and diaries of Elizabeth Keith, one of the 20th century printmaker. Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956) visited Joseon during the Japanese occupation (1919, 1921, 1934, and 1936) and tried to understand the life and culture of the Joseon peopleo objectively through a genuine dialogue with the Joseon people. It is also significant in that it reflects the reality of the Joseon people while realizing the historical characteristics of the Japanese colonial period. Nevertheless, the comprehensive analysis of the works and the works left by Keith has not yet been attempted in academia. This study investigated representative images of Joseon women distorted by Westerners and Japanese imperialists, and examined whether they were reproduced with the difference between Joseon women images and Joseon women in the works of Keith who searched for Joseon during the Japanese colonial period. As a result, Keith attempted to show that he was a painter of differentiated consciousness that recreated the image of Joseon women based on objective facts, not Orientalist gaze by the other. The image of Joseon women reproduced in Keith's art works exists as individuals with individuality and identity, not stereotyped characters. In other words, it is meaningful that Joseon woman is not an alienated Oriental person who is typified, but rather an image which is reproduced as an image based on the efforts and sympathy of the artist who wants to understand the culture of Joseon.
