초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the dynamic relationship of language andculture based on the sociolinguistic framework. Language is the essential tool wherebywe conduct our social lives. When it is used in contexts of communication, it is closelyintertwined with culture in various ways. According to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, different people speak differently becausethey think differently, and that they think differently because their language offers themdifferent ways of expressing the world around them. This paper offers a newinterpretation of the weak version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. It is noted that meaning is not achieved once and it is likely to be created through theinteractions of speakers and hearers in social contexts. In this way, linguistic meaningsare changed into cultural meanings. Language use is a cultural act because its users cooperatively co-construct the social roles that define them as members of a discourse community.
