Abstract
Exploring the intersection between queerness and disability is not only a requirement for political solidarity against the violence of normalcy, which stigmatizes those who deviate from the norm, but also a matter of serious concern for those who are both queer and living with disabilities seeking to understand their lives and communicate their experiences with others. This paper is an attempt to think about disability from a queer perspective, queerness from a disability perspective, and bringing these two conceptualizations into discussion with one another to redefine and rearrange the discursive landscape surrounding both queerness and disability. First, I identifies the stigma of pathologization as the primary obstacle to achieving solidarity between queerness and disability and will explain what is pathologization, how does pathologization otherize both queers and the disabled and create hostility between them, and how to resolve this artificial conflict between the two communities and create a foundation for solidarity. Furthermore, I will discuss the importance of deconstructing normalcy and normative systems and how such a deconstruction must be achieved via cooperation of the queer and disabled community. The following chapter, positing that the common goal of queer studies and disability studies lies in the deconstruction of normalcy, focuses on sexuality among many other issues in which queerness and disability intersect. It will find that queer theory’s contribution to sexuality and asexuality will be helpful in reestablishing the sexuality of the disabled, which has been only regarded as pathological. On the other hand, by deconstructing queer theory’s development in the area of sexuality from a disability perspective, it will show us how a rich and complex discussion will newly emerge.
