Abstract

The issue of cooperation is closely related to key questions in the discipline of sociology while social dilemma theories provide a useful perspective on various real-world social problems. However, they have not yet received adequate scholarly attention among Korean sociologists in terms of research and teaching. Demonstrating how to conduct a simple classroom quasi-experiment in an introductory sociology course to analyze the simulated data, the current study intends to identify determinants on the development of cooperative norm in the context of Prisoner's Dilemma and then discuss some pedagogical implications of learning social dilemma. The main results indicate that intergroup competition and direct communications tend to facilitate cooperative behavior even in an asymmetric relation where the focal player in a cyclic network who helps an adjacent co-player on one side can expect cooperation only from another co-player on the other side. By contrast, we fail to observe the diffusion of cooperation through either direct reciprocity in repeated interactions or a form of indirect reciprocity by which it means that the focal player cooperates only her adjacent neighbor with good image. Teaching cases of social dilemma by using classroom experiment potentially contributes to learning by doing and discovery of some sociological core concepts and further to citizenship education highlighting civic values and attitudes.
