개인적인 이익 추구행위와 개인이 속한 사회의 이익을 최대화 하는 것 사이에 발생하는 갈등의 상황을 ‘사회적 딜레마(social dilemmas)’라고 하는데, 이러한 상황에서 개인들이 자신의 이익을 추구하여 사회적 최적(social optimum)에 도달하지 못하게 된다는 전통적인 경제학의 예측과는 다르게 현실의 사람들은 자신의 이익에 손해가 나더라도 협조적인(cooperative) 행동을 하는 것이 종종 발견된다. 사람들은 개인의 이익뿐만 아니라 타인의 이익, 공동체의 이익도 고려하는 사회적 선호를 가지고 있기 때문인데 개인들의 이러한 사회적 선호는 사회화 과정에서 형성되며 학교교육이 사회적 선호형성에 아주 중요한 역할을 한다. 본 연구에서는 최근 우리 학교교육에서 강조되고 있는 리더십교육과 봉사 활동 같은 비교과 영역의 활동이 사회적 선호 형성에 기여를 하고 있는지를 분석하였다. 구체적으로 학생들의 비교과 활동 경험과 사회적 선호, 두 변수 간의 상관관계를 도출하기 위해 본 연구에서는 서울시 소재 여자 고등학교 370명을 대상으로 공공재 게임을 진행하여 사회적 딜레마 상황에서의 사회적 선호를 측정하였다. 분석결과 학생들의 사회적 선호와 학급 임원 경험의 유무 및 횟수, 사회봉사활동 경험의 유무 및 횟수는 강한 양의 상관관계를 보였다. 즉 사회적 선호는 교과 교육뿐만 아니라 교내외의 봉사활동 경험을 통해 형성될 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
Social dilemmas are situations involving conflicts between individual interests and collective interests. Unlike individuals in standard economic theory, it is reported that individuals act cooperatively rather than maximize their own interests in social dilemma situations. In reality, individuals exhibit social preferences concerning not only private interests but also the interests of others as well as the community. This so-called social preference is developed through the internalization of social norms and school education. Recently, Korean school education has been emphasizing leadership and voluntary social service activities. Leadership training and voluntary social service activities are categorized as extracurricular activities performed in the form of creative discretionary activities or special activities in Korean school education. This study investigated the effect of these extracurricular activities on students’ social preferences. To measure the students’ social preferences, a simple ‘public good’ game was conducted with about 370 students attending a girls’ high school located in Seoul. The results indicate that the social preferences of students are positively correlated with experience in leadership and experience in voluntary social service activities. The result implies that not only curricular education but also extra-curricular activities such as experience in leadership and in voluntary social service activities are very important in establishing social preferences among girls’ high school students.
