‘공유지의 비극’과 같은 사회적 딜레마 현상이 이론적 예측과는 다르게 개인의 상호적인 (reciprocal) 행동이나 협력에 기반하여 공동체 자율적으로 해결되는 사례는 많이 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 사회적 자본으로서의 공동체 구성원간의 신뢰가 이러한 개인의 상호적인(reciprocal) 행동 또는 협력에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 경제실험을 통해 실증적으로 고찰하였다. 개인의 상호적인 행동 혹은 협력수준을 측정하기 위하여 ‘공유지의 비극’이라는 경제실험 모형을 바탕으로 피실험 대 상인 고등학생에 맞게 재구성하여 실시하였다. 또한 신뢰와 협력 정도가 사회과 학업성취도나 사회 적 활동에 대한 학생들의 태도와 유의미한 관계를 갖는지 검증하였다. 분석 결과 신뢰가 사회적 딜 레마 상황에서의 협력정도에 긍정적인 영향력을 미치는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 학습자의 사 회교과 학업성취도가 신뢰 및 책임감과 관용성지수 같은 사회적 활동에 대한 학생들의 태도와 유의 미한 양의 상관관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study investigates how and to what extent trust among members of community as an essential factor of social capital contributes to overcome a social dilemma such as “the tragedy of the commons” by looking at the relationship between trust and the cooperation among members of community. In so doing, we also try to understand the effect of social studies education on promoting the cooperation among members of community. We ran an economic experiment called the tragedy of the commons with 450 female students in a high school located in Seoul to measure the degree of cooperation. We also collected the data on various measures of trust and academic achievement on social studies by surveying the same 450 students who participated in the experiment. The results suggest that higher general trust level among community members indeed contributes to the increase of the degree of cooperation among members as previous studies have found. We also find that cooperation occurs more frequently among those who understand the concept of the tragedy of the commons clearly than those who do not. Regarding the effect of social studies education on promoting cooperation among community members, we find a statistically significant and positive relationship between a student's scores on social studies tests and her level of responsibility and tolerance, which in turn affect her general level of trust toward the other members of her groups.
