Abstract

This study investigates the effect of moral norm on blood donation. In addition, both self-efficacy and social capital are considered as moderator variables in order to explain blood donation in an integrated approach. Then, this study tests the interaction effect between moral norm and both self-efficacy and social capital on blood donation. This study focuses on a gender difference and tests whether the interaction effect between moral norm and self-efficacy on female and the interaction effect between moral norm and social capital on male are relatively stronger. Using data from 293 university students in Seoul, this study tests several hypotheses. Result show that moral norm has a significant effect on blood donation in both male and female. It is also found that the effect of self-efficacy is the most strong, but the effects of social capital factors are not significant in both male and female. However, when self-efficacy and social capital are considered as moderator variables in both male and female, it is revealed that the interaction effect between moral norm and self-efficacy is significant on female, while the interaction effect between moral norm and social trust on male is significant. These results show a gender difference in the interaction effects and support hypotheses in explaining blood donation. The policy implications are discussed.
